Group Update

Hi everyone,
Just wanted to update you all on the group project we've been working on. We've held a few meeting now which at one stage I thought would never happen. For a long time, I had only been able to contact one member of the group-very friendly and we got along well but it was a slow beginning. After deciding our theme and what roles we might play we decided to wait until we had our full group together before moving ahead. A little while later we were informed we had a new member to the group and finally we could beginning planning!

We decided to work on the theme of automation, and what that means for creativity. We were going to explore the roles technology might play in human evolution, for better or worse. This changed however when we decided that in fact, this didn't totally meet the brief and we could perhaps choose a topic more in line with what we were being asked about.

So back to the drawing board! After some discussion and rereading of the brief and research sources we were provided with we decided to focus more on the responsibility the creative fields hold on our environment. We will have to present this in front of a class which seems a bit daunting but I'm sure we'll manage.

Meeting in person, which we've done twice now, has meant that the group has accelerated our efforts to work together. I think when meeting in Second Life, or through email, one can easily switch off and forget about what was discussed. But putting a face to a name humanises the relationship, empathy and genuine connection kick in and suddenly you are a group of people who all want the same thing, rather than a soulless set of letters on a  screen.

I think this is an interesting facet of human connection that is being over looked. Even as a vampire, I can appreciate the difference between reading body language, seeing the emotion of a face and sharing a moment together rather than the stunted interaction that inevitable occurs online.

Although SL has done a great job of addressing this, with microphones and the ability to gesture and move about, their is still an element to it that is incredibly different to human interaction and I am not sure I;m fully on board with it yet.

The group, when we did finally meet, got on really well. We could quickly ascertain that we had similar ideas about the topics discussed and we were able to establish a clear working style and agenda. I think the research we've shared is really interesting and will make for an insightful and engaging presentation. At least I hope it will!

Thanks for listening/reading!  I hope everyone is gearing up for a great summer and excited to warm their blood a bit. I will be flying North, back to the snow so you won't hear from me for a while. But it's been a pleasure writing these past few months, so thank you again for sharing this time with me.

All the best,

Coldtoesies
